What's the Difference Between Deodorant and Antiperspirant?

As you’re wandering the hygiene aisle of your local supermarket, you may notice something a little confusing. You have options for both deodorant and antiperspirant. Are these the same? Different? Does it matter? Well, it turns out that they don’t! We’re going to walk you through the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant, so that you can make informed decisions when shopping!

Differences Between Antiperspirant and Deodorant:

The basic difference between deodorant and antiperspirant lies in what they actually aim to do. Often used interchangeably, there are differences between deodorant and antiperspirant. In short, deodorant prevents the growth of bacteria and resulting odors, while antiperspirant aims to stop the sweating process entirely. Both are pretty dirty work, but which is more important for you? It comes down to a couple main factors.

What's Right for You: Deodorant or Antiperspirant?

The key difference is in how they work. Deodorant kills off bacteria and masks the smell. Antiperspirant, on the other hand, is used to clog the pores, usually by blocking them with aluminum. Sweating is a natural bodily function. It's used to cool your system and flush out waste. So, while we encourage everyone to use the products that make them happy, we avoid antiperspirants, as they prevent a natural (and important) function.

In fact, much of what we do is centered around the belief in the body's natural processes. That's why we make our deodorants aluminum-free! We believe in the importance of a good sweat, but we know you don't want to stink up the room. To keep your system running the way it should, we develop our products to work in tandem with your system and natural processes. So, the next time you to go reach for a product, be sure to check if you're buying an antiperspirant or a deodorant. Check your labels to ensure that, if you want to sweat, you are buying something that is aluminum free!
